Carolina Forest tennis coach Alexis McNabb had a hunch 鈥 and she was right.
The Panthers outlasted rival Conway 4-2 on Tuesday to win the 5A Lower State championship.
鈥淚 had a feeling this was going to be our year,鈥 McNabb said. 鈥淎t this point, I鈥檓 a little ecstatic.鈥
Carolina Forest will play the Spartanburg-T.L. Hanna winner on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence.
The Panthers could be good for a while. None of their winners were seniors. Carolina Forest won at No. 1, 2 and 5 in singles and took the lone doubles contest with perhaps the youngest tandem in the state.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 unbelievable for these girls to not crack under the pressure,鈥 McNabb said. 鈥淲hat they did tonight is really impressive.鈥
Olivia Bull downed Anna Claire Roof 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Katie Godfrey beat Avery Combs 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles while Ellie Yates won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.
Conway's Taylor Hendrick swept Payton Yates 6-2, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Emory Combs won in No. 3 singles.
The clincher came when freshman Mayissa Dorcely and Helena Butwin, who is an eighth grader at Ocean Bay Middle School, outlasted Kate Inabnit and Emery Howle 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles match that put Carolina Forest over the top.
鈥淚t鈥檚 unbelievable,鈥 McNabb said. 鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of those two for pulling through for us.鈥
