One of the many contributions to the Loris youth by the city鈥檚 longest running civic club, the Loris Civitan Club, is its annual scholarship award. The monetary award is given to a deserving college or high school student from the Loris area.
This year the winner of the $500 scholarship is Caitlyn Mackenzie Rhodes, a Loris High graduate and senior at Coastal Carolina University.
Rhodes applied for the Civitan scholarship back in early February and was among several applicants seeking financial aid to further their education.
鈥淲e are pleased to award this scholarship to another outstanding academic student such as Caitlyn, 鈥渟aid Loris Civitan president Tommy Waddell. 鈥淪he has proven herself in both the high school and college ranks as an outstanding student and citizen of the Loris community.鈥
Rhodes is history major at CCU, where she has already been tapped as an honors graduate, with a current college grade point average of a perfect 4.0. She will graduate in December but has plans to continue her education, pursuing her master鈥檚 degree in teaching from CCU.
Despite the high average at CCU, Rhodes also stood out in the extracurricular areas as well.
Rhodes currently serves as the vice-president of CCU鈥檚 chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, which is the History National Honor鈥檚 Society; is a student senator for the Student Government Association; a member of Phi Eta Sigma honor society; is a CCU Jackson Scholar, and is a member of the CCU鈥檚 honor鈥檚 program. She also served as a resident advisor (RA) this year for underclassmen at CCU.
鈥淭his scholarship was so important to me,鈥 said Rhodes. 鈥淭here are very few if any scholarships or financial assistance available for those seeking master degrees. This will help so much and I so appreciate it.鈥
Rhodes accepted the Civitan scholarship check on Tuesday, March 12 during the club鈥檚 regular meeting at Grouper鈥檚 Seafood.
