Thanks to the Loris Civitan Club, some very special students from Loris area schools will have a better Christmas this year.
During its Nov. 26 meeting, Loris Civitan president Charles Webster and treasurer Larry Dawsey recognized the teachers of special needs students from each of the Loris area schools with a meal, and presented checks to each teacher to be used as they see fit to help the students this Christmas.
鈥淲e just want you all to know that we appreciate the work that you all do with these students,鈥 said Webster.
鈥淲e hope in some small way that these funds will help you offset some costs, and maybe give some of these kids a better Christmas, thanks to the opportunities you provide.鈥
On hand for the check presentation were Loris High School special education teachers Marie Hemphill and Tina Harshman, Loris Middle School鈥檚 Sharon Wallace and Kristen Frailey, and Daisy Elementary School鈥檚 Laura Winship.
鈥淲e so appreciate the financial assistance your club has been so generous to provide for our students,鈥 said Hemphill.
鈥淟ast year we were able to give them all MP3 players for about $15 each, and they were so excited and appreciative. They love music.鈥
Each school received an equal share per student for a total award of $1,150 provided by the Loris Civitan Club.
The city鈥檚 first and longest running civic club has followed the Civitan Creed in aiding the needs of special needs children for 75 years.
The club is actively seeking new members and welcomes any caring man or woman to join them in their efforts to support the needs of Loris area special needs children and be a service to the Loris community.
