An Horry County employe has been fired and arrested after a police investigation allegedly showed 鈥渁 number of violations鈥 of the county鈥檚 animal care and treatment ordinance, a county press release states.
Kaylee Gasque worked at the Horry County Animal Care Center, an animal shelter and treatment facility north of Conway. Her employment was terminated, having worked for the county since Dec. 2023.
鈥淏ased on the investigation thus far, there is no indication of mistreatment of animals in the workplace by the individual,鈥 the release states.
According to the release, HCPD launched an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip on Monday. Six dogs and two rabbits located in her home have been seized and taken to the animal care center. The animals will undergo a medical evaluation.
She was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 16 and charged with eight counts of mistreatment under the county鈥檚 animal care and treatment ordinance.
The county ordinance states that it is illegal to poison, kill, mistreat or abandon any domestic animal; allow animals to roam at large; allow an animal to create a public nuisance; overcrowd animals; and that animals must be provided with sufficient food, water, shelter and needed veterinary care. The ordinance states that violating the ordinance is a misdemeanor which can result in a fine and removal of the animal from the offender鈥檚 care.
The county asks anyone with information about animal abuse to call the non-emergency dispatch line at 843-248-1520.
