A 20-year-old has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting at a Conway Police detective during a traffic stop in December 2022, the 15th Circuit Solicitor鈥檚 Office announced.
Tywrell Jacob Alston, 20, of Conway, pleaded guilty on Wednesday, Feb. 12, to attempted murder in connection with the incident. He is not eligible for parole.
Circuit Court Judge Alex Hyman sentenced Alston to 20 years in prison.
The solicitor鈥檚 office said attempted murder is a violent, most serious charge under South Carolina鈥檚 Two Strikes Law, making Alston ineligible for parole. Attempted murder carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
Jim Stanko, a violent crimes assistant solicitor, prosecuted the case for the 15th Circuit Solicitor鈥檚 Office.
The trial in this case was scheduled to start on March 3.
The guilty plea comes after Alston filed a civil lawsuit against the Conway Police Department on Jan. 17. He is filing for personal injury and representing himself. He is asking for $1 million and for his charges to be dismissed.
The city of Conway said it could not comment on the sentencing due to pending litigation.

Authorities said on Dec. 29, 2022, Conway Police Detective Nicholas Contino attempted to stop a Jeep Cherokee driven by Alston near the intersection of 9th Avenue and Palmetto Street in Conway.
After failing to stop for close to a minute, the solicitor's office said Alston pulled into his own driveway on Forest Loop, exited his vehicle and fired five shots at the police vehicle. One of the rounds went through the officer鈥檚 open door and entered his seat, "narrowly missing him."

Authorities said Contino dove back into the car, drew his own weapon and returned fire. Alston was struck numerous times and required hospitalization; Contino was not injured. The investigation found that Alston had THC and Etomidate in his system, plus a blood alcohol content of 0.066%.
Alston was arrested in connection with the case in January 2023.
In Alston's handwritten lawsuit, he said on the date of the incident, he went to the gas station, left and returned back home. Once he arrived, he stated in the lawsuit, he noticed a suspicious vehicle and remembered seeing the vehicle on the road toward his home.
"I didn't know who the occupant of the vehicle was but I was in great fear of harm to my home and myself," he wrote. "As things escalated I was left with critical injuries after being shot 10 times. I was shot as I stood and while on the ground."听
Alston claims in the suit that the officer followed him home and pulled behind Alston's vehicle, blocking him in. The lawsuit states Alston "later told Conway Police Department that he was conducting a traffic stop."
The lawsuit states Alston suffered from a broken jaw and had to have part of his kidney and colon removed.

This kid should be grateful that he is not dead for shooting at a police officer.
What a waste of taxpayer money on all accounts (the civil lawsuit & paying for his 3 squares & lodging)
Thank you Judge for protecting our police and civilians from this little menace. And thank god this officer was able to go home to his family at the end of his shift.
It鈥檚 so sad that some children glorify thug life. They have every opportunity to be, do & make better decisions. Choose wisely!
Seriously, there鈥檚 a civil suit filed? This kid is ruined as it is, what鈥檚 the rap sheet look like?
