Sept'24 teacher

The September 2024 Window World Teacher of the Month is Jacquelyn Varcadipane, a middle school math teacher at Ten Oaks Middle School.

Jacquelyn Varcadipane was nominated for teacher of the month for making learning math fun for her students and always wanting to see them succeed.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Varcadipane grew up in a town about 12 miles outside of New York City.

Varcadipane received dual undergraduate bachelor's degrees from Seton Hall University in education and psychology and her master鈥檚 degree in middle level education from William Paterson University.

Although she originally attended Seton Hall University to study law, she realized that she enjoyed teaching more. When she would study she noticed she would talk out loud to herself and 鈥渢each鈥 herself the material. She realized then that she could help other people learn like that.

She taught at Lincoln Middle School in Passaic, New Jersey for a total of 15 years. She spent 13 years in the classroom teaching students and the last two years of her career at Lincoln Middle School she served as the head of the math and science department.

鈥淚 really didn鈥檛 like it. I didn鈥檛 like not being with the kids,鈥 she said.

She relocated to the Myrtle Beach area in 2007 and was nationally board certified a few years after moving down.

Varcadipane worked at Ocean Bay Middle School for the first 10 years it was open and when the schools split and Ten Oaks Middle School opened she moved there.

鈥淚鈥檝e been here since the school opened,鈥 Varcadipane said.

The 2024-25 school year will be her eighth year at Ten Oaks Middle School.

She currently teaches pre-algebra, algebra and geometry courses to eighth graders. Her favorite activity to do with her students is a Super Mario quadratics activity.

鈥淭he students basically have to write equations or manipulate equations to make a path for Mario to catch stars,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey have to get Mario to save Princess Peach and defeat Bowser.鈥

This allows students to play with different numbers in equations and come up with different transformations, she said.

Varcadipane explains that this activity and other hands-on activities she does during class allows students to be creative while still learning the content.

鈥淚 try to make it real and related to something,鈥 Varcadipane said.

Forming connections with students is one of Varcadipane鈥檚 favorite parts of being a teacher.

鈥淚 think my favorite part of being a teacher is knowing that I鈥檝e made long permanent connections with most of my kids,鈥 she said.

She will keep in touch with students once they move on from middle school to high school. There are a few former students from 1996-97 from her time teaching in New Jersey that she still keeps in contact with.

Outside of school, Varcadipane enjoys spending time with her kids.

鈥淭hey are my rocks,鈥 she said.
