Travis Overton, a top administrator of Coastal Carolina University, has died, the university's president announced on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
Overton, who served as CCU鈥檚 , joined the university in July 2007. CCU said Overton became the interim leader of University Belonging and Student Affairs earlier this month.
Details surrounding his death were limited in the New Year's Eve announcement.

CCU President Michael T. Benson said Overton dedicated much of his professional career to the university and was one of the 鈥渂est colleagues I have ever had the privilege to work with.鈥
鈥淗e was tirelessly committed to the success of the University and beloved by students, faculty, staff, and community members,鈥 Benson said. 鈥淗e had an innate ability to diffuse potentially combustible situations with his empathy and understanding. His lasting impact on the University is immeasurable. I will miss him terribly.
鈥淢y prayers are with Travis鈥 family and friends and the entire campus community as we support each other during this challenging time. All of us feel crushed by this news, but remain grateful for Travis鈥 friendship and all the good he did for so many.鈥
Overton鈥檚 duties included supervision of CHANT411, scheduling and event services, and university marketing and communication, as well as assisting in the operations of the office of the president.
Overton has served as vice president of student rights and responsibilities/dean of students. He also worked in student affairs, including housing, fraternity and sorority life, student conduct and off-campus student services.
In addition to his roles at CCU, Overton served as vice president on the board of .
Hillary Howard, executive director of Conway Downtown Alive, said Tuesday that while welcoming the community to New Year's Eve fireworks in downtown Conway, she was struck by "just how much Travis would have loved to see this gathering."
"His energy enthusiasm and encouragement propelled Conway Alive into a new chapter and cultivated formidable leaders in our growing organization," she said. "This is an immense loss for Conway Alive, Coastal Carolina University and the community at large."
A bio on CCU's website states that Overton was from the Nashville, Tennessee, area. He held two degrees 鈥 a bachelor's and an MBA 鈥 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.聽
He resided in Myrtle Beach and was an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and served as an advisor for the African American Initiative for Men at the university.
CCU said additional details regarding ways to honor Overton will be shared as they come available.
The university is offering counseling resources for faculty, staff and students in the wake of Overton鈥檚 death.
